Let’s work together to make this unforgettable event a safe one for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests. Safety is non-negotiable and everyone’s responsibility. Every member of our community must be proactive in following safety guidelines to ensure a secure environment for all.

A Network of Support

We’ve partnered with law enforcement and local agencies to ensure robust safety measures at all Homecoming events, reinforcing our dedication to keeping you safe. 

Bison S.A.F.E. App

Stay informed and alert by downloading the Bison S.A.F.E. app. It provides real-time emergency notifications, event updates, and direct access to campus security. Search “Bison Safe” in your app store to download.

Peace of Mind (POM) Device

If you don’t have yourHU Peace of Mind device, visit the Department of Public Safety (located on the 2nd floor of the Service Center).

Restricted Bag Policy 

The Restricted Bag Policy will be enforced at all official University Homecoming events this week at the following locations: Blackburn Student Center, Burr Gymnasium, Cramton Auditorium, and Greene Stadium.

Bags must be clear and measure no larger than 12′′ x 12′′ x 6′. All bags are subject to visual screening, no matter the bag’s size. Fanny packs are allowed and must be clear. Medical and baby bags will be permitted and must be screened before entry. No other bags will be allowed.

Note: The Howard University Department of Public Safety (HUDPS) reserves the right to prohibit other items. Exceptions will be made for individuals with medical requirements and/or special needs. Guests with specific/special dietary needs due to medical conditions or special needs should email hudps@howard.edu at least 48 hours before attending events to arrange reasonable accommodations.

Additional Key Safety Reminders

  • Have a Plan - Coordinate designated drivers, meeting locations, and activities in advance. Share your plans with someone you trust. 
  • Stick Together - Travel in groups or request a police escort. 
  • Be Aware - Stay alert, especially when interacting with strangers. Report suspicious activity immediately to public safety. Be aware of ticket and event scams. 
  • Protect Valuables - Secure your belongings and lock your car or room. Avoid displaying large sums of money. 
  • Drink Responsibly - If you are 21 or older and choose to drink, do so in moderation. Avoid drinking and driving. Use rideshares or designated drivers. 
  • Hydrate and Rest - Take care of your physical well-being throughout the week.
